Young Crockett Descendant Honored at Reunion
Michael Wheatley Merritt III, known as Tre’ Merritt, was the center of attraction Saturday the 12th of July as the Crockett’s gathered at the Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park near Greeneville, TN for their Biannual Reunion.
The Direct Descendants and Kin of David Crockett gave Tre’ an award, "Hunter Achievement Award" for the youngest Direct Descendant of David Crockett to Bag an Adult Black Bear. He is the 10th Great Grandson of David Crockett through Margaret Crockett Flowers. He appeared to be very proud of his hunting award.
Tre’ was only 5 years of age when he and his Grandfather, Mike Merritt, decided to go bear hunting near Dewitt on the 9th of December 2007. To make a long story short this diminutive hunter shot and killed a 445 pound black bear, without assistance from his Grandpa. You see, he isn’t a novice when it comes to shooting a rifle, he been doing this ever since he was about 3 years old. He not only hunts bear but he is a successful deer hunter as well.
Tre’ isn’t a novice when it comes to media attention since his famous Bear hunting experience near Dewitt. When the word got out about his accomplishments, News reporters from all over gathered, to interviewing Tre’ and his Grandpa Mike. He was seen on ESPN Sports and FOX Sports as well as the Little Rock television station KATV-TV channel 7, and many Arkansas Newspapers carried the story of this unusually talented marksman and hunter. It can truly be said that Tre’ Merritt inherited his ancestor, David Crockett’s, remarkable skill as a bear hunter.
